Can E-Learning transform the education system?

E-Learning is the new concept emerging rapidly in today's education industry. E-learning refers to web based distance learning with no face to face interaction.

E-learning is a very good concept as it allows a person to learn from anywhere in the world and it provides complete flexibility in terms of time as well. Today, abundant information is available on almost every subject and one can gain knowledge on any subject sitting comfortably at home.
One can think of having E-Schools in near future. Imagine doing a course from foreign university sitting in India.
E-schools can help to take the best of education to even the remotest part of the country. Students in villages will have access to world class study material at affordable rates and classroom sessions can be done through videoconferencing or any other suitable means. The students will save a lot on fees and simultaneously have access and interaction with quality teachers in big cities/metros.
This concept can be extended to even coaching classes and other degree courses. The institutes will also save money as they dont need to have expensive infrastructure.
Also it will be good for the environment as this eliminates the need to paper material thereby saving lots of trees.
Any enterpreneur thinking in this direction?

  2. E-Learning can never replace the regular fulltime learning programs. There can be some specialised highly technical courses whcih can be learnt while sitting at home / internet. But the actual learning that happens is by involving into the ecosystem of that course. I strongly discourage e-learning or distance learning courses for undergraduate levels, and management level courses.

  3. E-Learning is an excellent teaching aid. So it can augment traditional techniques very well. To create a full ecosystem, our network capabilities have to increase many folds and it has to be highly affordable.

  4. There are too few truly great teachers who invest themselves in the 'education' of their charges. When I was growing up, my teachers (with some exceptions) used the cane as a teaching device if one failed to understand one or two examples in the explanation of a concept. As I grew older, in college I found teachers used sarcasm and rude humour in getting a point across to a slow student - that was perhaps because the teachers were motivated by self-preservation and chose to give the 'cane' a wide berth.
But on a more serious note, I would say that both e-learning and classroom based learning have their uses. Both complement each other. Technology in learning, as much in our everyday lives, is a reality and cannot be wished away. Admittedly, there are several infrastructural challenges yet to be met, but e-learning as a channel to deliver education is here to stay and can only get better.

  6. Well designed e-learning materials (courses, learning experiences) can provide a better experience for the learner than traditional education, especially for adults and corporate sector. E-learning frees us from our inability to warrantee that: the instructor (traditional training) is always well prepared, starts on time, cares about their learners really learn, finds ways for adapting to the group (slowing down for some learners or making it faster for advanced ones), and handling their interventions efficiently (how about those that never stop interrupting); also that all learners being able to attend to classes on time (schedule fits all), and so on with a series of characteristics that when missing result in waste of money and time…And then, some of those good learners that achieved the goal… leave the company.
